Star Wars BattleFront II
A charging clone army Star Wars Battlefront II
Hi Rebels, Stormtroopers and Droids! Today, i will be reviewing Star Wars BattleFront II. You may have heard of it. You may even have played it. But it's a great game. Made in 2005 by Lucasarts, this game is a first/third-person shooter, where you choose a soldier class and spawn at a command post. The game has several gameplay modes, several being conquest - where you obliterate the enemy - capture the flag - where you obtain the enemy flag and bring it back to your home command post - and Hunt - where you fight as either the natives of a planet or a single soldier class from the attackers and try to wipe out the opposition. The game uses a 'reinforcement' mechanism, where each side has a certain amount of reinforcements, and each time someone dies, the reinforcement count will decrease by 1. When your reinforcement count gets low, the game orders some of the AI to stop spawning, to stop them from losing the game without giving the player a chance to win. On the ground missions, though, there is always the need to work with your team. The game's developer's made this easy for us by giving us the ability to order men to follow us. The engineers carry helth and ammo packs, and the AI will sometimes walk up to you and give you some, as if to say, 'Good job!'
The game is a bit hard at fist, but it is very easy o get the hang of if you try enough. You can also switch between first and third-person modes to suit the way you like to view your character. There is the feature of unlocking 'points' by playing a game and getting 'points,' explained below, or killing enemies. If you get enough of the required thing, say kills with a rifle, you will be equipped with an elite rifle, which is better than the standard one. There are many different rewards, such as homing rocket launchers, sniper-pistols, stamina increase, etc. Stamina is needed for sprinting, jumping and rolling, which are very useful for getting around the battlefield.
Conquest is probably the funnest mode to play, as you can set the number of reiforcements before the game starts, as well as the amount of AIs in-play at one time, along with 'hero mode' on or off. Hero mode is, essentially, where if the player gets enough points by kills, flags returned, command-posts captured, etc. they get the oppurtunity to play as a hero from your faction. So the empire would get Darth vader or Boba Fett, and the Droids would get General Grevious or Jango Fett. The hero you get ultimately relies on what map and what faction you play as. There is also a 'Heros vs Villains' mode in the Free Play mode, by selecting the 'Aussault' option on the Mos Eisley map.
I just love it, at the start of a game on a big map, like Geonosis or Hoth, how your AI teammates start spawning en masse and just charge at the enemy, not knowing if they'll die or dominate.
A major difference from Star Wars Battlefront I is that you get about 6 different space maps, which is where there are 2 cruisers for each faction in space, each one accompanied by at least 2 frigates, which are armed with about 8 auto-turrets that need to be shot to bits to be disabled. You get two soldier classes, pilots and marines. Pilots have a pistol, 3 time bombs and a repair torch. Marines come with a blaster rifle, rocket launcher and some grenades. Pilots have a special ability to repair their vehicle while in-flight, wheras marines come more in handy when trying to fend of a boarding party, though those will only happen in multiplayer games, as the AI is not programmed for boarding, probably due to lack of game production time. I also wish that there was some sort of melee attack, because there are too many occasions where the armies clash and everyone is mingling together, chucking grenades and planting bombs. This results in a frustrating, chaotic event. But this makes it all the morth worthy to play as the sniper class, as the sniper rifle's bolts never disintegrate over distance. The game also has some downloadable mods, but I haven't had the pleasure of looking at those yet.
This game is great, and I know that all true Star Wars fans will enjoy this game. I still play it just because it's a great game to play. They have also worked in a little story by adding a campaign, where you play as a soldier from the 501st legion and go on through the years of the Republic turning into an Empire. It doesn't really work all that well, since there are no characters at all, and the 15 second cutscenes are just moments from the movies. Despite this, It was still fun! Overall, I am giving Star Wars Battlefront II, 8.5 out of 10.
